Preventing Falls

CREATE A SAFE ENVIRONMENT
- Make sure stairways, hallways and pathways are well lit and free of glare, shadows and clutter.
- Keep phones in as many rooms as possible in case of an emergency.
- Install handrails on stairways, hallways, and in the bathroom or bedroom where you frequently get up and down or dress.
- Install a handrail in the shower and next to the toilet.
- Be sure carpeting is firmly attached and remove throw rugs.
- Be sure light switches are accessible at the entry to all rooms and by the bed.
- Keep a flashlight handy.
- Arrange furniture so traffic areas are free of obstacles, and keep loose wires and electrical cords off the floor.
- Use chairs with arm rests to assist you in getting out of a chair – Avoid chairs with wheels.
- Use a night light in hallway between bedroom and bathroom.
- If you take more than one prescription, make sure the combination of drugs does not make you dizzy. Call your doctor if dizziness is present.
- Place a rubber mat in front of your sink so you will not slip on water.

ADAPT YOUR DAILY ACTIVITIES AND ROUTINES
- Do not get up too quickly after lying down or sleeping. When getting up from bed, first swing your legs over the side and sit for a moment. Then stand up slowly.
- Make sure the temperature in your home is not lower then 65 degrees, especially at night. Cold temperatures cause the body temperature to drop and can lead to dizziness and falls.
- Use a cane, walking stick or walker to help maintain balance if unsteady when walking.
- Be sure to wear supportive, rubber-soled, low-heeled shoes. Avoid wearing only socks or slippers, which may cause you to slip.
- Wear light colored clothing or something reflective when walking outside in the evening or early morning.
- Don’t wear long skirts or floor length nightgowns.
- Have vision checked regularly.
- Avoid using a chair or step stool.
- Avoid walking on wet or icy streets. If you must do so, be very cautious.
- Ask your doctor about starting a regular exercise program to increase your strength and flexibility.

Remember to take care of your health and well being, and ask others for help when you need it.
